India Wants A Port In Greece – Lavrio, Patras And Alexandroupoli In Focus

The Greek government is selling Lavrio, Patras, and Alexandroupolis to India, which is building its own economic corridor

India is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. Estimates suggest that by 2030, it could be the third largest, behind only the US and China, surpassing Japan and Germany, reported Greek City Times.

Running at high growth rates, 6.3% per year, and taking advantage of its huge human capital, which for the first time surpassed that of China, analysts estimate that by the end of the decades, it could even double its GDP.

In this context, India seeks to build its own modern economic corridor, an initiative similar to China’s “Belt and Road Initiative” The plan envisages a corridor for transporting products from land and sea that will reach the Middle East and then, through the Mediterranean, end up in Central and Northern Europe.

A key stop on this route could be Greece, and India’s opportunity arises from the Greek government’s intention to put three important Greek ports under the hammer.

These are the port of Lavrio, the port of Alexandroupolis and Patras. The Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (TAIPED) is preparing for the three tenders and attracting investors.

According to iEidiseis, the ports in question were also presented to the Indians during the business mission led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to India.

Regarding the port of Lavrio, the tender process was opened at the beginning of March and foresaw the sale of 50%+1 of the Lavrio Port Organisation.

The developments with the port of Alexandroupoli also have a geopolitical dimension, as it is a point of great strategic importance.

It is recalled that the previous tender process was aborted due to the war in Ukraine, even though it had reached the final phase of submitting binding offers. After the Russian invasion, the Greek government—and under the recommendations of the Western allies—wanted to re-evaluate all the parameters for its sale.

Finally, the port of Patras is the next one being prepared for exploitation by TAIPED, which is currently planning the process for attracting investors.

TATA Developing Complex High-Precision Machines To Make Apple iPhone Casing

Reducing China Dependence and aiming for substantial exports

TATA Electronics has tied up with two Indian manufacturers in Pune and Bengaluru to develop capabilities to work on developing very sophisticated and complex high-precision machines used to produce the casing of the iPhone, Economic Times reported.

The equipment can be found in the production lines of independent contractors that collaborate with multinational corporations like Apple. The action is anticipated to provide the government's $300 billion electronics export goal by 2025 with a significant boost.

Given the geopolitical conditions, this comes at a time when Apple is trying to diversify its manufacturer base to reduce its dependence on China.

According to the report, “The TATA Group is testing these machines in a staged manner at their Hosur facility. Part of the objective is to grow more of its local capability because the company is not just looking to build enclosures, it wants to develop the ecosystem in the country. These machines are just one of the many inputs that go into making a component or an enclosure that the company is looking at to reduce its exclusive dependence on certain parts.”

Ajai Chowdhry, co-founder of HCL, told Times of India, "Everybody wants casings, if TATA Group is able to do import substitution and they're able to make these machines in India, it will create an industry because so many people want casings. Anybody who wants to make a phone or a tablet in India needs casings and if they're able to adhere to Apple's stringent standards, it would be a high-quality machine in itself."

The program lays the groundwork for future exports in addition to increasing domestic output. Additionally, it can help India achieve its ambitious ambition of exporting $300 billion worth of electronics by 2025.

RAW Continues To Be Secretive Unlike Its Global Intelligence Counterparts

First Chief of India's external secret service agency Research & Analysis Wing R N Kao

NEW DELHI: Since R.N. Kao, 23 more chiefs have headed the agency and all have continued to follow the path that was laid down by their founder, of avoiding public attention.

It was more than 56 years ago that Rameshwar Nath Kao became the first chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) in September 1968. Working on the orders of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, with no or little mandate except to safeguard India’s interest from foreign powers, for which he was also given verbal order to carry out covert acts across the borders to defend India’s strategic interests, Kao had no time or the inkling to make “RAA” (as it is pronounced by Pak military officers), to make it open to public interface or use public’s eyes and ears to collate information that might be useful for its own purpose.

Since Kao, 23 more chiefs have headed the agency that prides itself as something which works in darkness, and all have continued to follow the path that was laid down by their founder, of avoiding public attention.

This has happened despite the agency’s counterparts like the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of America, Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE) of France, Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) of Australia, Federal Intelligence Service (Bundesnachrichtendienst) of Germany, Mossad of Israel, MI5 of United Kingdom, Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) of Canada among others, operating their website, telling about their work and interacting with the public to seek inputs and information related to their work.

The CIA, which functions under the Office of the Director of National Intelligence that has a budget of $71 billion, the highest for any intelligence agency, has prominently written on its site on how it seeks information from the public. “People from all over the world share information with the CIA daily. If you have information you think might help us and our foreign intelligence collection mission, there are many ways to reach us.” The interested user is provided with multiple options to reach out to the CIA through its website, including the easiest of them, through email.

However, if an Indian citizen or a foreign national wants to reach out to RAW which functions under the administrative office of Cabinet Secretariat to provide possibly vital information, there is no way to do it.

Like Delhi, Beijing too for a long time practised the art of keeping the working of its secret intelligence agency as a secret.

The Chinese intelligence agency, Minister of State Security (MSS), which completed its forty years of existence this year, till 2014 was known for being super-secret regarding its existence. However, after getting inspired from the Western countries including its arch rival, Washington, Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to lift the veil around MSS. It was read, and perhaps rightly so, as a show of confidence and an effort to be on the equal footing with other intelligence agencies who have exhibited that they can work by talking about themselves, that the MSS in 2015 launched its website and a hotline so that the people could reach out to it with information. It soon after debuted on social media.

India, given the speed with which misinformation, that is attributed to its intelligence agency has been spread in the recent times (among other, stories related to Gurpatwant Singh Pannun) and in the past which has amplified due to a lack of a strong and formal rebuttal, perhaps needs to learn lessons from Beijing if not Washington on why and how its intelligence agency needs to have a public face. The agency’s eyes and ears, which are right now very low when compared to other global counterparts, will increase manifold if it even opens a one-way channel to solicit information from the public.

In an interview of Vappala Balachandran, who served in the RAW for 19 years and retired in 1995 as Special Secretary, published in January 2024 by Dheeraj Paramesha Chaya, Lecturer in Intelligence, Crime and Policing, University of Hull University of Leicester, who was formerly with Department of Geopolitics and IR, Manipal Academy of Higher Education [MAHE], while responding to the question of the interviewee on what was the nature of media-intelligence relationship during his time, Balachandran, while alluding to an old article about a former RAW chief, said, “That news article was very weird. It was totally false. Unfortunately, even from the beginning we had no relationship with the media. We were afraid to go near the media. I remember Mr. Kao never gave a single interview, even informally. We simply followed the same practice and kept away from the media. When I was in the Bombay Special Branch, I had a very good relationship with the media and some of my friends became national media leaders. So, I could have done the same in the RAW, but we were asked not to. And we actually suffered because of not having such a relationship.”

Balachandran, in a significant insight on the dilemma that RAW has faced when it comes to the question of becoming more “public” and when was the only time that it broke this practice, stated, “In the 1980s, there was a strike in the RAW and the IB, and certain disgruntled elements who wanted to make it sensational, started placing exaggerated and, in some instances, false stories in the media. For example, they started saying that there was no insurgency in the North-East, and it was the intelligence agencies that started the violence. Even with Khalistan, they started saying RAW was orchestrating it. These stories were absolutely false. When the Bodo insurgency started, there were sensational reports that we were training them. My chief A.K. Verma asked me to tap some of my good friends in the media and I had to go and meet the chief editor of Statesman and point out that these were all false stories.”

He went on to add, “Then there was a discussion on whether we should have a PR officer or similar. It led to a question on what such a position would entail. If we hold a press conference, then they would ask various things which may affect our operations and access to certain channels of information. So, as long as I was there, we remained undecided about how to approach the media.”

“But I can give you one instance when we broke that unwritten taboo since it was a larger strategic issue. From 1977 onwards, we were monitoring Pakistan’s clandestine nuclear weapons programme. However, nobody was willing to believe our findings. It was quite frustrating that the Americans were not believing us, and our own Atomic Energy Commission was reluctant to do so. Two New York Times journalists, Steve Weissman and Herbert Krosney, were investigating Pakistan’s covert nuclear programme. For the first time, the government made a conscious decision to reach out to foreign media because only then would the Americans be convinced. We gave them our assessment with a request to not reveal the source. So, this was the only time we interacted with the media for a strategic reason.”

The dilemma that RAW and Balachandran faced two decades ago continues to haunt the agency even now. Even as its strategic competitor and its strategic ally—Beijing and Washington—respectively have done with good results, what Delhi and RAW still continue to believe is something that needs to be avoided.

Indian National At Centre of Pak’s Misinformation Network

NEW DELHI: Portals and groups such as Hindutva Watch and India Hate Lab are the brainchild of Pak deep state.

Foreign-based “research groups” that are the brainchild and are being funded by various arms of the Pakistani deep state, are recruiting Indian nationals, working in Western countries, to run these groups and portals that have been specifically created to spread misinformation about India at the international level.

The reason behind having Indian faces in these groups and portals is to add legitimacy to their claims about the rising “hate” in India.

According to intelligence agencies tracking these groups and portals, the “research work” done by these groups and portals is then given a larger audience and more legitimacy by members of the Washington-based mainstream media.

Inputs and assessment seen by The Sunday Guardian related to some of these portals and groups such as “Hindutva Watch” and “India Hate Lab” clearly show that they are the brainchild of and were brought into existence by well-established names of Pakistan’s deep state, including the India-focused Jamaat-e-Islami. According to a probe done by intelligence units, Hindutva Watch first came on their radar in 2019 when a Twitter account was launched in that name followed by a website. For four years, it continued to be active, working anonymously, working without revealing who was actually handling it.

However, in January 2023, in an interview to a Western media outlet, Raqib Hameed Naik, an Indian national from Doda district, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed that he was the man who was running the site. This claim is false, as inputs seen by The Sunday Guardian reveal.

The fact that the media outlet published the words of Naik, without cross-checking the same with easily available facts on the internet, suggest that either it was done deliberately to strengthen the disinformation campaign against India or it was a work of careless research and vetting.

As per publicly available information, after completing his Masters’ degree from India, Naik went to the UK for further studies in journalism. After coming back, Naik’s name was “forwarded” and “recommended” by the soft arms of the Pakistani deep state, as per the claims of the intelligence agencies, to global media outlets so that his “anti-India” stance could get a global audience.

In 2020, after being questioned by Indian security agencies on his “rabid, baseless” anti-India commentary in the global media and the reasons, if any behind it, Naik left India and settled in the United States without facing any difficulty—the US is a country which claims to have one of the most stringent policies when it comes to accepting foreign nationals. As per the agencies, after that, Naik was asked to come out in the open by his “handlers”, which prompted him to say he was the man behind the two anti-India portals.

However, the investigating agencies claim that they have evidence that these two sites were being run by Pakistan based handlers for a long time before Naik falsely claimed as being the man behind them.

As per information seen by The Sunday Guardian, Hindutva Watch was being handled by Sardar Adil Kayani—an anti-India operative, who also runs propaganda for Pakistan’s PML-N party. Much of the content that is used on the site is misleading and based on fake news with the intent to incite communal friction in India.

After getting information that the origin of Hindutva Watch has been discovered by Indian agencies, the Pakistani deep state brought into existence another project, “India Hate Lab” that too started manufacturing a narrative to target India in a more sophisticated manner. In January this year, it peddled disinformation by misrepresenting a Statista report stating that India ranks number 1 in misinformation and disinformation.

Kayani is a well-established name in anti-Indian propaganda. In 2017, he launched a “signature campaign” on Kashmir on Change dot org seeking “Free Kashmir” demand. He is also closely working with another covert arm of Pakistan’s deep state, “Global Village Space”.

The inputs seen by The Sunday Guardian suggest that Naik was working closely with the leading Pakistani Jamaat front in the US, Justice For All (JFA), which was founded by Jamaat leader Abdul Malik Mujahid. Incidentally, JFA also owns the Muslim Network TV.

According to these inputs, Naik, before he moved to the US, was closely working with portals that are a part of information warfare network run by Jamaat loyalists indicating that he was being “groomed” for a prominent role by the handlers of this information warfare. Once in the US, he was supported by Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC), and Justice For All (JFA), both groups whose closeness to Pakistan’s rabid Islamic groups and deep state has been well documented. These groups have been using their resources to influence US watchdog United States Commission of Religious Freedom (USCIRF) so that it can recommend actions against India. Naik too was used as a tool in this endeavour.

The content of Hindutva Watch and the people behind it were a focus of a documentary that was published by a Singapore-based entity, which was directed and produced by a Pakistani origin and US-based filmmaker, who is well known for the person’s anti-India stance.

Emails sent to Naik and the portals for a response from their side on this report elicited no immediate response.

In December 2021, Naik was awarded for reporting on Kashmir, Indian minorities and Hindu nationalism by a Pakistan Jamaat front founded by Abdul Malik Mujahid, and which also runs Justice For All.

GAZA Protest: America Accuses China of Triggering & Fomenting Unrest In Universities

China has targeted all sources of American innovation, including universities, corporations, and government labs, exploiting both their openness and naïveté

WASHINGTON: The congressional legislation to force a sale or ban of TikTok in America is just one of a series of ongoing initiatives intended to stop the Chinese government’s relentless and largely previously unencumbered efforts to penetrate the inner sanctum of the American government and acquire and manipulate its citizens’ data, while seeking to influence its political processes. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has deftly done so, with increasing success, for decades by taking advantage of America’s many freedoms and gaps and inconsistencies in its regulatory environment. This had been possible at scale because the American government (and many of its businesses) had failed to successfully contain the CCP’s cyberattacks, intellectual property thefts, access to university (and other forms of) research, and mis/disinformation campaigns.

Fortunately, the Biden administration followed the Trump administration’s lead in starting to turn the tide. Successive US administrations must not stop where Trump and Biden started. The US intelligence community’s 2019 Worldwide Threat Assessment report identified a number of research areas that will determine global military and economic superiority in the coming decades; AI, gene editing, synthetic biology, 5G, and quantum computing were among the areas specifically referenced. It noted that America’s lead in the science and technology fields had been significantly eroded, the result of steadily declining US budgets for basic scientific research and a lopsided emphasis on the life sciences, to the detriment of emerging technologies, where China continues to greatly outspending America.

Government funding of basic and applied scientific research is not only lagging, but falling dangerously behind China, and too little corporate funding is being spent on the basic research that leads to transformative discoveries. The US has the world’s best research universities and a strong culture of innovation. All that it really needs to do is devote more funds to scientific research to give China a run for its money. To beat the Soviets to the moon, NASA received more than 4% of the federal budget in 1965 and 1966. If it really wants to have a hope of maintaining its scientific edge, that type of commitment is once again required. But will it be enough in the face of what is, in essence, a state-sponsored foreign technology transfer apparatus?

Beijing has enacted dozens of laws that have created a technology-siphoning machine. That apparatus maintains databases of foreign co-optees and distributes stipends, sinecures, and cash to foreign donors of high-tech innovations. China has targeted all sources of American innovation, including universities, corporations, and government labs, exploiting both their openness and naïveté, with methods and tradecraft custom-tailored to each target. At American universities, China takes advantage of the commitment to intellectual freedom on campuses. In US corporations, the lure of access to the Chinese market gives Beijing tremendous leverage in eliciting technology transfer from American firms, combined with financial incentives for employees to purloin intellectual property for personal gain.

China could not have experienced the dramatic economic transformation it has experienced in the 21st century, nor have sustained its progress as it has, without inexpensive and unrestricted access to other countries’ technology. Since the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is required to cover a portion of its own costs, state theft through the PLA has become a well-established business. With only 70% of its operating expenses covered by the state budget, the PLA must make up the difference and generate supplemental funds for its modernization . The PLA maintains thousands of front companies in the US, whose sole reason for existing is to steal and exploit US technology. That includes American universities.

The recently reported rise in the number of interrogations and deportations of Chinese students in America is an unfortunate, but necessary, extension of the evolving mosaic between the US and Chinese governments. Certainly, the same is true vis-à-vis American students in China, where the CCP has zero tolerance for anything that even has the potential to result in the theft of Chinese research, technology, or secrets. It is only natural that American universities would become a battleground between the Chinese and American governments.

But this is ultimately the result of the CCP’s brazen ongoing campaign of theft of intellectual property in America and around the world. If Chinese students are looking for someone to blame, they should look no further than their own government. This battle must be fought by the US government on an eye-for-an-eye basis—what the CCP does to America and its citizen, America will do to China and its citizens. The rest of the world should do the same.

Agni Prime Is The New Missile In India's Nuclear Arsenal; This Is Why It's Special

The Indian Defence Ministry announced the successful test firing of the country's New Generation Ballistic Missile Agni-Prime, from the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, off the Odisha coast. This test was carried out at 7 pm Indian Standard Time on Wednesday (Apr 3).

This launch was executed by the Defence Research and Development Organization and the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), which comprises personnel from the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force.

The SFC is incharge of handling the country's nuclear arsenal, while the DRDO is responsible for developing weapons systems and related military technologies.

"The test met all the trial objectives validating its reliable performance, as confirmed by the data captured by a number of range sensors deployed at different locations, including two downrange ships placed at the terminal point", said the Defence Ministry statement.

It added that the test firing was witnessed by the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Strategic Forces Command and Senior officials from the DRDO and Indian Army.

Salient Features of Agni-Prime

The solid-fuelled Agni-Prime is a surface-to-surface missile capable of hitting targets at ranges of 1200-2000 kilometres. Having such a range puts it in the class of medium-range ballistic missiles. For context, the Intercontinental ballistic missiles are those that have ranges exceeding 5,500kms.

In a vast majority of missiles, it is common to use solid fuels (which are pre-filled), as opposed to liquid fuels, which are filled into the missile just a few hours before firing (similar to how fuel is filled in planes and conventional vehicles), which makes the logistics and handling process very challenging.

Liquid fuels used in missiles are not always easy to store and handle and some fuels are toxic in nature and sensitive to other ambient factors.

Solid fuels are most widely used in missiles, as it helps store them for a long time. During the manufacturing process of solid-fuel missiles, the fuel and oxidizer in a fine powder form are bound together by a rubbery material and packed into a metal casing. For example, a solid-fuel missile can be stored for many years together, with just minimum inspection at periodic intervals.

Another feature of the Agni-Prime is the use of composite materials in the build of the missile. The material is produced by merging two or more materials with different properties, to eventually create a material with certain specific, unique properties.

In the case of rockets and missiles, the composites used must be able to withstand the stresses and loads of high-speed flight, withstanding the high temperatures. Composites are used because they are often lighter and much stronger than some metal alloys. Having lesser overall weight also enhances the payload capacity and range of the missile.

Agni-Prime is a cannisterised missile, which means that it is stored in a launch tube or canister, unlike other missiles that are exposed to the outside environment. A canisterised missile would have its warhead preloaded before it is placed in the launch tube. This offers the ability to launch with minimal preparation time.

Storing a missile in a canister or launch tube protects it from the elements- dust, debris, and also possible damage during any mode of transport and handling. It also requires less maintenance. They can also be easily integrated into various platforms for launch- from land, air or sea.

The Prime variant of the Agni missile also benefits from a host of advanced sensors, navigation and guidance systems which significantly enhance the precision of the missile and its impact. It is also the smallest and lightest variant in the Agni series of Indian ballistic missiles. It is meant to replace the initial stages

What Is A Ballistic Missile And Why Is It Named So?

A Ballistic missile follows a ballistic flight path - which comprises three phases of flight. In the first phase or the boost phase, the solid-fuel rocket engine propels the missile upwards and it has to rapidly gain velocity and altitude, by knifing through the densest parts of the earth's atmosphere.

The second and unpowered phase of flight happens in the upper reaches of the earth's atmosphere or in space, where the missile travels along its pre-determined path, but without the power of its engines.

It is known as the coast phase or mid-course phase and during this time, it travels along a horizontal path. During the coasting, the missile is either in space or the upper atmosphere, where it faces minimal resistance or drag.

In the third and final phase or the terminal phase, the missile descends and gets back into the earth's atmosphere and flies towards its target, while being guided by its on-board systems.

Lighter And More Agile

The Agni-P, initially named Agni-1P, is said to weigh 50 per cent less than Agni-3 and is the lightest and smallest of the Agni series because of technological advancements, sources said.

The missile comes with new composites, propulsion systems, innovative guidance and control mechanisms, besides the latest navigation systems.

Adding to the usefulness of the missile is that it is a canisterised system. This means that the movement and launch options increase for the Strategic Forces Command, which oversees India’s nuclear arsenal.

The missile can be launched from rail or road and can be transported to various parts of the country.

The two-stage and solid-fuelled weapon system comes with new propulsion systems, composite motor casings, and inertial navigation systems based on advanced ring-laser gyroscopes. Gyroscopes show the location of the missile and the trajectory it is taking.

Sources said that the ring-laser gyroscopes are more accurate.

“The missile can even be manoeuvred at one point if need be,” a source said. This feature, which is usually not available in a ballistic missile, makes it more difficult to intercept.

Past Tests of Agni-Prime

On June 7, 2023, India's SFC performed the first pre-induction night launch of the Agni-Prime and successfully accomplished the mission objectives.

This test was conducted after three successful developmental trials of the missile, validating the accuracy and reliability of the system.

The latest test is the second pre-induction night launch of the Agni-Prime. Generally, a couple of tests are conducted in various phases, before inducting the missile into the arsenal. Each of these tests helps validate different technical parameters and offers insights into the consistent performance of the missile.

Xi Camouflages His Master Plan For Crushing Taiwan’s Freedom

BANGKOK: Sources that were within the higher echelons of the CCP say that under the direction of Xi, a Master Plan has been drawn up that is to be ruthlessly implemented once his objective of the unification of Taiwan with the PRC takes place.

As a consequence of the firm response of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to PRC efforts at further expansionism at the cost of Indian territory, and the bravery and quality displayed by the Indian Army during the 2020 Galwan clash, chances are rising that it will be Taiwan and not India that would be facing a kinetic assault from China. Since 1949, it has been the declared ambition of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) that the island nation of Taiwan would be integrated into the PRC in the manner that Xinjiang and subsequently Tibet was.

Despite the immense strategic implications of the absorption of Xinjiang and Tibet, in practice, since the 1950s there has been little blowback from major concerned countries at such an expansion by force of China’s borders. Despite the fact that the takeover of Tibet resulted in the territory controlled by the PRC acquiring a long border with India, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru accepted the change without demur. In 1959, the Dalai Lama was forced to flee to India as a consequence of efforts to convert him and the high religious status he held into accomplices in whatever was decided by the CCP for Tibet. As a consequence, the traditional culture of Tibet was maintained and protected within India even while being systematically obliterated on the other side of the boundary.

Especially since the 1980s, Taiwan has transformed from an autocracy to a democracy of exceptional quality. As a consequence, the CCP is planning to ensure that any trace of democracy gets wiped out, should the PRC leadership succeed in their mission of integrating Taiwan into the PRC. Given that the Taiwanese people have over the years been more and more open against unification with China, such a process is expected to be lengthy and ruthless. After the Hong Kong protests during 2019-20, the CCP leadership believes that stamping out any trace of democratic behaviour is an existential matter for the party. The fear at the top was that the “democracy virus” would spread to the Mainland from Hong Kong, especially in cities such as Shanghai and Beijing.

Hong Kong is a lesson in what happens to promises made by the CCP. Believing in the 1997 Basic Law, efforts were made by the population of Hong Kong from the 1990s until 2019 to make the governance system of the HK Special Autonomous Region conform to the processes of democracy in a way that was absent in the past. From 2016 onwards, such moves were met with harsher and harsher state repression, until by 2019, any trace of the implementation of the 1997 UK-PRC agreement on Hong Kong was snuffed out. Given its size and much deeper democratic roots, Taiwan is slated to experience much more elevated levels of repression than HK, which are to be carried out in order to extinguish any trace of the practice of democracy in the island.

Disillusioned Cadre Expose Xi’s Taiwan Plan

Contours of planning for the Day After a takeover of the island nation by the PRC have become known as a consequence of the increasing distaste within the CCP cadre to General Secretary Xi Jinping’s arbitrary methods. Hundreds of thousands of CCP cadres have fled the country since 2012, although some of them are covert agents of the State Security Bureau of the PRC. From their inputs, it has been possible to piece together a profile of what is being planned for Taiwan from the “day after” the island nation gets overrun by the PLA and loses its freedoms.

Sources that had functioned within the higher echelons of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) say that under the direction of General Secretary Xi Jinping, a Master Plan has been drawn that is to be ruthlessly (described as “resolutely” in the documents accessed by former cadres) implemented once Xi Jinping’s objective of the unification of Taiwan with the PRC takes place. In the meantime there have been thinly concealed efforts at keeping the fires of conflict burning in other flashpoints of the world in order to distract the US and its allies from focusing on the threat faced by Taiwan. Going by the information provided by former higher cadres, by 2021 nearly two million Taiwanese residents have been put on the database of the relevant wings of the CCP governance mechanism. This is the number of Taiwanese citizens considered by CCP security agencies to be “unreliable”. They have been marked for “re-education” on the model long practised by the PRC. As many as 280,000 have been identified as “Anti-State Elements”. These include those who have been especially vocal about the fact that Taiwan is an independent state, and should remain so.

They have been marked for confinement in camps until their “re-education” is completed. Almost 40,000 democracy activists and leaders are to be immediately sent to prison, while hundreds have been marked for execution as “Traitors to the (Chinese) State”, some after a show trial, others summarily. Such is the fate awaiting Taiwan should the PRC succeed in carrying out Xi’s vow that “unification will take place during my term” in office. A foretaste of such planning has been the way in which openly pro-democracy Taiwanese nationals visiting China since 2021 have had their entry cards destroyed in their presence. Several have been confined to cells for days before being put on the next ferry home.

CCP Disinformation Warfare Increases

Expectedly, the CCP has sought to conceal its intentions through a blitzkrieg of information warfare, including through popular CCP-controlled apps such as TikTok, that are very popular in Taiwan. As part of such a campaign of presenting a benign face towards the people of Taiwan, Xi Jinping had this month hosted a former President of Taiwan in the PRC, and given protocol and respect that has thus far been unprecedented where meetings between Taiwanese and Chinese leaders are concerned. Not very subtly, his effort was to show that far from disrespecting the island nation and its democratically elected politicians, the CCP leadership considers them as “family”. The message sought to be conveyed is that a takeover will be benign, a coming together of close relatives long separated. The factual situation has been revealed by former senior cadres who were part of the CCP governance mechanism but left out of fear that they would soon be next in line where the lengthening list of victims of the repression initiated in the PRC, especially since 2015, is concerned. Should a takeover happen, even those now favoured by the CCP as being genuine “compatriots” would find that the manner in which they get treated changes significantly. That this would be the case is by now well understood by a majority of the population in Taiwan, although a diminishing number still place their trust in CCP disinformation.

Xi Acts Nice To Convey Benign Impression

Ma Ying-jeou served two terms as President of Taiwan, and during that period, implemented several steps designed to bring the two economies closer together. In his final days in office, Ma faced a “Sunflower Movement” that opposed his efforts at getting passed a Services Agreement with China. It must be added that Ma has been a believer in peace, and in his view, at heart so is his “old friend” Xi. In April, the former Taiwanese President spent eleven days in the PRC. This was the second visit made by him to the neighbouring country, and for the second time he had a face to face meeting with Xi Jinping, the first such meeting being in Singapore in 2015. The April 2024 meeting was noted across the world for its optics and possible significance.

CCP General Secretary Xi Jinping, the Head of State, Party, Military and Government’s 45-minute meeting with former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou in Beijing, was held weeks ago in the Great Hall of the People rather than in the Taiwan or Fujian Room, as had been the norm when discussions between Chinese and Taiwanese policymakers take place. Unexpectedly, Xi made no reference to contentious issues such as cross-strait relations during the meeting, confining himself to pleasantries. Nothing gets done by a CCP leader without careful scripting, and it was clear that the intention behind the Xi-Ma meeting was to attempt to show the Taiwanese people that the other side are (in the words of Xi at the meeting), “family members”. The implication was that a takeover of Taiwan by the PRC, or what is termed “reunification”, would be a cordial affair, a “family reunion”, again in the words of Xi. Former President Ma has his ancestral roots in China, as do many other Taiwanese. However, unlike the overwhelming majority of his people, Ma remains sentimental about the other side of the Straits, and made no effort to conceal his joy at the warm welcome he received during his second visit to China, the first being to pray at the graves of his ancestors last year. During their first meeting at Singapore in 2015, Xi had told Ma that “we must meet again”, and this time as well, he expressed the same “you are always welcome” attitude.

China Factor In Taiwan Politics

Following the January 2024 victory of the DPP for the third time in the Taiwanese Presidential elections, the disinformation machinery of the PRC has been on overdrive in an effort to convince the population of the island that they would have nothing to fear from what would be (in view of the antipathy of 90% of Taiwanese to the idea) necessarily a forced absorption of Taiwan into the PRC. In 2019, the way in which the 1997 UK-PRC agreement on Hong Kong was torn to shreds by Xi Jinping helped ensure a second term for President Tsai Ing-wen, who is committed to retaining the freedoms of her country and ensuring that they do not get erased by a PRC takeover. In the last Presidential election, over 40% of the voters stood by the DPP and its candidates William Lai and his Vice-President pick Bikhim Hsiao, despite repeated threats from the Chinese side that a victory for the party would mean war. Another 23% voted for the Taiwan People’s Party, which promised to keep Taiwan free by skilful diplomacy with the Chinese. Scarcely a quarter of the population voted for the KMT, despite the fact that few even in the KMT favour unification with the PRC, knowing as they do the repressive nature of the state machinery on the other side.

KMT Chairperson Eric Chu had chosen New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi in 2023 as the party’s Presidential candidate in order to cut into the voting base of the DPP. Mayor Hou is what is termed a “native Taiwanese” and is moreover from the south of the island, where the DPP predominates. The choice of a native Taiwanese, that too from the south, an individual who had served as the Chief of Police during the tenure of President Chen Shui-bian of the DPP, upset the “Mainlander” faction of the KMT, and they succeeded in selecting Mainlanders with pro-China leanings as both the Vice-Presidential candidate of Hou and as the top pick of the party for the legislature. The consequence was that the KMT ticket changed colour in public perception from “light blue” (moderately friendly to China) to “dark blue” ( very friendly to China and open to unification). The switch in perception ensured that the KMT lost votes amongst a population that was more than 90% opposed to unification in any form. Much of the youth vote went to another party, the TPP, but not enough to enable it to secure more than eight seats in the Legislative Yuan. As the KMT became the largest party in the national legislature, and because the TPP abstained from voting, the KMT’s legislature party leader Han was elected Speaker on a minority of votes. Should DPP and TPP come together for the purpose of unseating Han, the DPP would get the Speakership and the TPP the Deputy Speakership, although as yet such a pairing does not appear to be in the works.

Option of War On The Table

A drumbeat of reports have been appearing across the world that Xi Jinping does not want war, and that he would avoid kinetic action. Such a conclusion flies in the face of the reality that by 2027, conditions in the PRC are likely to make Xi’s position shaky, and he may calculate that (1) the US and its allies would no longer have the will to defend Taiwan if attacked by the PLA, and that (2) resistance by the nation could be crushed, were its allies to not step forward and defend its sovereignty. The CCP is also (3) banking on the conflict remaining confined to Taiwan, rather than expanding elsewhere within the Indo-Pacific. Xi is relying on the lack of appetite within the public in NATO member states to get involved in a conflict in Asia, unlike the enthusiasm they have shown where a European state, Ukraine, is concerned. The democracies are on notice, and the example of the 1930s in Europe shows the folly of believing that authoritarians under pressure, who have made no secret of their ambitions, will abstain from conflict should they decide that the same is needed to protect their position. Should President Biden sign into law the TikTok bill and the Tibet Bill, both of which have bipartisan support in the US Congress, such a step by the White House would give greater confidence to US friends and allies that the US in the 2020s is not what the UK was in the 1930s, sleeping at the wheel while the other side planned for war. TikTok has had a corrosive effect on US society, encouraging contempt for democratic institutions and politicians, while portraying China in rosy hues.

India and Japan in particular will be watching to see what President Biden’s reaction to TikTok as well as the Tibet and Taiwan legislation would be, given that under Modi, India is taking unprecedented steps to combat PRC expansionism, and in recent days Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan is coming closer to the line taken by his predecessor Shinzo Abe, who together with Modi will re-invigorate the Quad. Despite some missteps, overall the Quad is expanding its scope and capability, and is regarded as more than a match for the PLA where the defence of the Indo-Pacific is concerned.

INS Kochi Sailors Checks Missile-Hit Ship; All 22 Indians Safe

Specialist teams of the Indian Navy deployed on board warship INS Kochi have inspected crude oil tanker MV Andromeda Star at sea for any damage and safety of its 30 crew, including 22 Indian nationals

The Panama-flagged tanker was hit by Yemen-based Houthi rebels as it was transiting the Red Sea en route to Vadinar in India from Russia’s Primorsk.

The vessel was intercepted by INS Kochi and an aerial reconnaissance was carried out by a helicopter to assess the situation. An explosive ordnance disposal team was deployed on board Andromeda for residual risk assessment. The crew are safe and the vessel is continuing its scheduled transit to the Indian port. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations security agency said the attack took place southwest of the Yemeni port of Mokha. The second attack on the vessel consisted of what is believed to be two missiles, which resulted in damage, it added.

A news agency reported that Andromeda Star’s current owner is registered in Seychelles and the tanker is engaged in Russia-linked trade.

The Israeli missiles have been inducted in the IAF’s Su-30MKI, MiG-29 and Jaguar fighter aircraft.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has inducted Rampage long-range supersonic air-to-ground missiles which can hit long distance targets up to around 250 km.

The Israeli missiles have been inducted into the IAF's Su-30MKI, MiG-29 and Jaguar fighter aircraft, while the Navy is using them on the MiG-29K fighter jets, government sources told India Today.

The long-range Rampage missiles would give the Indian pilots the option of attacking targets from far ranges of around 250 km, the sources said.

The IAF is planning to mass produce the Rampage missiles in India under the Make in India initiative.

The Indian Air Force has recently also successfully carried out a test firing of a new version of an air-launched medium-range ballistic missile that is capable of hitting targets at a distance exceeding 250 km.

The missile, also known as as ROCKS or Crystal Maze-2, originated from Israel and underwent a test launch from a Su-30MKI fighter jet in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands last week.

ISRO Chief Says Private Players Will Make Space More Accessible

Bangalore: Private players in space technology will certainly help speed up the research in the field, Indian Space Research Organisation chairman S Somanath has said while interacting with space enthusiasts, through the official Instagram page of ISRO.

Replying to an observation that SpaceX, a private entity, has contributed more to space technology than most countries, Somanath on Saturday said America's tradition of encouraging private companies to involve themselves in building rocket engines and, in the case of SpaceX, to explore human flight vehicles can be replicated by India.

He said these companies are playing a crucial role in advancing technology, reducing costs and making space more accessible.

It is possible for even private companies in India to develop these kinds of capabilities, he added.

However, he said this is only possible if the government supports the private entity, “For instance, some of the technology that is owned by NASA is transferred to Space X so that they could develop faster. This is why SpaceX has made such strides, it had nearly 45 launches this year," said Somanath.

He said already there are two companies working in India – Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos. “We are all excited to see India going this way. These companies have already tested launch vehicles. It is an interesting development,” said the ISRO chairman.

Answering a question on Chandrayaan-4, Somanath also shared an update on India's next moon mission.

According to him, Chandrayaan-4 mission is being developed as a continuation of the Chandrayaan series.

“Prime Minister Modi has announced that India intends to land on the moon in 2040. To achieve this goal, continuous moon exploration is necessary. Chandrayaan-4 will be the first step towards this objective. The mission aims to send a craft to the moon, collect samples, and bring them back to Earth. Eventually, when India is ready for human spaceflight, Indian astronauts will be sent on a Chandrayaan craft to the moon to conduct experiments and return safely,” he added.

The interaction lasted for an hour and Somanath signed off with a promise that he would be meeting again in May. The first #asksomnathisro was held on March 2. The event is an attempt to connect with the younger generation.

The Indian Coast Guard rescued the crew of 10 people from a stranded fishing boat off the coast of Ratnagiri in Maharashtra on April 26. Coast Guard officials stated that they responded to a distress call from the IFB Rijomon, which had been adrift for five days due to a machinery breakdown

Mumbai: The Indian Coast Guard rescued the crew of 10 people from a stranded fishing boat off the coast of Ratnagiri in Maharashtra on April 26. Coast Guard officials stated that they responded to a distress call from the IFB Rijomon (IND-TN15-MM-5792), which had been adrift for five days due to a machinery breakdown.

Responding to the distress alert received via communication set from MV Hari Anand, the Coast Guard Ship Apoorva braved rough weather conditions to reach the stranded vessel approximately 114 nautical miles from the coast. The Apoorva made contact with the stranded boat by 5:30pm.

Following a technical assessment that revealed the dire situation onboard the IFB Rijomon, including low food and water supplies, the Apoorva deployed its boarding along with a technical team to assist. By 8:40 pm, the Apoorva towed the IFB Rijomon towards Ratnagiri harbour, maintaining a vigilant watch despite challenging sea conditions throughout the night.

On April 27, 2024, at 1:25pm, the Apoorva arrived at Ratnagiri along with the IFB Rijomon, where it was handed over to IFB Abdul Latif Khatun (IND-MH04-MM-677) for further towage into the harbour for repairs. The owner of IFB Rijomon expressed gratitude to the Indian Coast Guard for their timely assistance, acknowledging the rescue of ten lives despite the challenging sea conditions.

Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad Nabs Pak Spy From Jamnagar

Mohammed Saqlain Umar Dawood booked for espionage and waging war against nation

Accused was in touch with the Pak Army, ISI

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Sunday nabbed an alleged Pakistani spy Mohammed Saqlain Umar Dawood, 22, from Jamnagar. ATS sources claimed the accused was in touch with either the Pakistani Army or Pakistan’s Spy Agency, Inter- Services Intelligence (ISI).

“The name of one Pakistani national Kishore alias Savai Jagdishkumar Ramvani has emerged during the investigation. Mohammed Saqlain had called up Ramvani on his WhatsApp number several times,” said a senior ATS official. The official said they are trying to probe if a sleeper cell is active at a time when India is holding its Lok Sabha elections.

“We have booked the accused for espionage and waging war against the nation,” said a senior ATS official. ATS sources told the Mirror that during technical surveillance, they came across a sim card purchased by one Asgar Aaji Modi of Jamnagar.

“Asgar had activated the sim card number on his mobile phone and had activated WhatsApp calling by obtaining an OTP and sending it to one Labhshankar Maheshwari of Tarapur in Anand district of central Gujarat,” said the official.

“Later following Maheshwari’s instructions the phone was delivered to Kishore in Pakistan through his sister Sushila who visited Pakistan some time ago,” said an ATS official. Gujarat ATS said the WhatsApp number was then used by ISI agents to call their sleeper cells in Kargil - over which India had waged a war against Pakistan after it tried to infiltrate it in 1999.

“The ISI agents also pushed malware through an examination link into the phone of an Air Force Jawan named Santosh alias Sintu Sitaram Bhatia who is based at a highly sensitive air base in Jammu and Kashmir. They thus tried to unofficially infiltrate the computer system, putting national security at risk.

We registered an offence against Mohammed Saqlain, Labshankar and Asgar under section 121-A, 123 and 120 B of IPC and section 43,66,66F (1) (b) of the Information and Technology Act,” a senior ATS official said.

Russian Fighter Jets Bullying US MQ-9 Reaper Drones With Their Afterburners And Flares Over Syria

Russian fighter jets were captured on video harassing US military drones above Syria. The US Air Force said the MQ-9 Reaper drones were conducting a mission against ISIS Wednesday. US officials have warned that Russian aircraft are increasingly carrying out aggressive actions

Several Russian fighter jets bullied a trio of US military MQ-9 Reaper drones operating above Syria on Wednesday, the US Air Force said, marking the latest provocation by Moscow's aircraft in the region.

The Reaper drones were conducting a mission against Islamic State targets on Wednesday morning when three Russian Su-35 jets closed in on the aircraft and began engaging in "unsafe and unprofessional behavior," Lt. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, the commander of US Air Forces Central Command (AFCENT), said in a statement.

Grynkewich said the Russian pilots harassed the drones on multiple occasions during the engagement.

"Against established norms and protocols, the Russian jets dropped multiple parachute flares in front of the drones, forcing our aircraft to conduct evasive manoeuvres," he said. "Additionally, one Russian pilot positioned their aircraft in front of an MQ-9 and engaged afterburner, thereby reducing the operator's ability to safely operate the aircraft."

An unclassified video published by the Air Force shows some moments of the engagement. In one frame, a Su-35 can be seen closing in on one of the MQ-9s, and later on, the parachute flares are captured falling through the drones' flight path. At one point, the caption slams the engagement as a "new level" of inappropriate action by Russia's air force over Syria.

"These events represent another example of unprofessional and unsafe actions by Russian air forces operating in Syria, which threaten the safety of both US and Russian forces," Grynkewich said. "We urge Russian forces in Syria to cease this reckless behavior and adhere to the standards of behavior expected of a professional air force so we can resume our focus on the enduring defeat of ISIS."

US officials in recent months have called attention to increasingly aggressive manoeuvres by Russian pilots in close proximity to American interests and assets across the Middle East, like armed flyovers of military positions and signalling a desire to dogfight.

To counter this phenomenon, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in June that it deployed a squadron of F-22 Raptors to the Middle East in a show of strength against Moscow. A US Air Force official told Insider at the time that although the jets will send a message, their main mission is to contribute to the ongoing campaign against the Islamic State.

Russia's "regular violation of agreed upon airspace deconfliction measures increases the risk of escalation or miscalculation," Gen. Michael Kurilla, CENTCOM commander, said in response to Wednesday's harassment.

Although the Reaper drones were not damaged, such an incident would not be unprecedented; a pair of Russian Su-27 fighters in March dumped fuel on and flew in front of a US military MQ-9 that was operating above the Black Sea before one of the jets clipped the drone, forcing Washington to bring it down into international waters.
